Transition to the “Real World”

Paul Carew has seen A LOT of portfolios.  As president of the AIGA Idaho chapter, and a designer in the field for over 16 years, he knows his stuff.  He has worked with clients such as A&W Root Beer, Albertsons, Charles Schwab, Idaho Shakespeare Festival, Cinder Wines, and J.R. Simplot Company.  And he wants to help YOU find a job when you get out of school.

Join us on March 16th at 6:00 pm in the Fine Arts Building to get Paul’s advice on preparing a portfolio, making the most of an interview, and landing a job.

Contracts, Billing & Networking- Oh My!

For those of you who can’t read the tiny type on the poster (or just don’t want to try), here is what it says:

FREELANCING FEARS CONFRONTED

Wednesday, Feb. 24th in the Fine Arts Building at 6:30 p.m.

Does the idea of contracts, proposals, invoices, marketing, budgeting, and networking make you want to hide under your bed? We know how you feel—and that is why we’ve called in an expert. As a successful freelancer in the Boise area, Jodie Thiel has volunteered to share her hard-earned wisdom regarding survival as a designer after school—in hopes that we can learn from her mistakes! Bring a pen, paper, and all your questions for a night of real-world education you won’t get in class.

Free to members, $3 for non-members

More about Jodie…

Jodie Thiel began her study of design at the University of Utah, and after a detour working in L.A. finished up her BFA in graphic design at BSU in 2008. She has served on the AIGA Idaho Professional Board since its beginnings.

T-shirt Design Contest- Help Haiti!

DESIGN MAKES A HUGE IMPACT on people- and we’re ready to show how it can be used as a force for good!  We’ve teamed up with the Volunteer Service Board and LDSSA to provide donations and supplies for Haiti crisis victims. We believe that with everyone’s help we will be able to reach our goal of raising $500 for Haiti relief efforts.

WHAT CAN $500 DO? A lot!  According to Doctors Without Borders, a $500 donation is enough to supply a medical kit containing basic drugs, supplies, equipment, and dressings to treat 1,500 patients for three months.

SUBMIT YOUR AWESOME WORK Help AIGA make a difference—Submit your T-shirt designs/illustrations by Monday, February 8th at noon. We need your talent to make sure we have the coolest shirt possible! Art must be in one color, fit in an 8.5 x 14 area, and be sent as a PDF to lindseyward1@u.boisestate.edu.

Possible phrases you might use, but are not limited to, are:

  • Haiti Relief 2010
  • Hatian Quake Relief- BSU 2010
  • Help Haiti
  • Raise Up Hope for Haiti
  • Aid Haiti 2010
  • BSU Supports Haiti

GET A SHIRT FOR YOURSELF Stop by the SUB on February 19th to get a unique t-shirt that we will be screen printing ourselves—or order one in advance by bringing $10 to Stephanie Bacon, John Francis, or Jennifer Wood.  For every t-shirt sold we will be donating $5 to the relief effort!

We will post the exact location within the SUB, as well as the exact time as soon as they are made available.

Remember: The deadline is Monday, February 8th, at noon!  Good luck!

UPDATE:  We are currently experiencing some paperwork problems with this event.  It has been postponed until further notice.  Thank you to everyone who submitted designs we really appreciate it!!!

Mix Mentor & TypeFace!!! January 20th

Mix Mentor is back! All design students should REALLY take advantage of this opportunity. We will be viewing a great new documentary called Typeface first in the SPEC at 6:30. You do not have to be a member to come to the screening, but Mix Mentor is for members only.
Immediately after the film, we will be moving to the Jordan Ballroom to enjoy light refreshments and mixing/ mentoring! We will pair students and professionals for 1 semester. Your professional member will meet with you several times over the semester to talk about the design industry, what they do, portfolio reviews, and to discuss any questions that you might have as a student.

This can be an incredibly valuable experience and a chance to meet professionals in the Boise design community.

You can register for the event by going to this link REGISTER!
